OUR EMPLOYEES:
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY (DD) is a severe, long term disability that can affect cognitive ability, physical functioning, or both. These disabilities appear before age 22 and are likely to be life long. The term "developmental disability" encompasses intellectual disability but also includes physical disabilities.
FACTS REGARDING EMPLOYMENT OF THIS POPULATION:
- persons with DD unemployment rate is twice as high as that of the general population
- less then 1 out of every 2 (ONLY 44%) working age adults (21-64) with DD is in the labor force as compared to 83% of working age adults without disabilities.
- 28% of working age adults with DD have never held a job
- almost all adults with DD are underemployed (are not full time and earn less then minimum wage)
- only 20% of adults with DD are employed nationally
FACTS ABOUT THE SIZE OF THIS POPULATION
- 18.7% of the population has a developmental disability (roughly 1 in 5 Americans)
- As of 2016, 6.99% of children aged 3-17 have developmental disabilities
